Why I Choose BCI as a Long-Term Direction
Notes on motivation, the kinds of problems that excite me, and what a ten-year plan actually looks like in a fast field.
The long view
I am an undergraduate, and I have chosen brain-computer interfaces as my long-term direction. This is not a hype-driven bet. It is the honest answer to a question I kept returning to: what kind of work would I still care about in ten years, even if the field slows down?
Three reasons
- Impact. Restoring communication for a person who has lost it is one of the clearest goods engineering can produce.
- Depth. BCI sits at the intersection of neuroscience, signal processing, and machine learning. There is no shortcut around the fundamentals.
- Craft. The work rewards patience — instrumenting a rig, cleaning a signal, defending a baseline.
A good long-term direction is one where the boring days still teach you something.
What the plan looks like
- Solid math and signal-processing foundations
- Reproducing classic decoding results end-to-end
- Reading neuroscience seriously, not selectively
- Small original projects, published honestly
I would rather move slowly and be able to defend every step than move quickly and cite things I do not understand.
